Talk less & listen more
Young people's most common complaint is that thier parents don't give them a fair hearing .  When young people speak, make sure they know you are listening: put down the paper, turn off the TV, and look at them.  Listen carefully without interrupting and then feed back to them what they have said.  This tells them not only that you heard but also that you took it in.
